In recent years the emergence of smartphones has seen a tremendous rise around the world. If we look specifically into France behaviour, the diffusion of smartphones experienced phenomenal growth between 2011 and 2018. Indeed, the share of French people with a smartphone rose from 17 to 75% in eight years. The conquest of the smartphone market was mainly led by the giants Apple and Samsung, which positioned themselves on the high-level smartphone market. The rise of smartphones and the arrival of new mobile telephony standards (3G then 4G) have contributed to the spread of mobile usage among the French population. The functionality offered by smartphones and the mobile Internet has profoundly changed the Internet consumption habits of the French. Today, you no longer need a computer and a fixed connection to consult your mailbox, go to social networks, make online purchases or even watch digital content in streaming. Users have become more and more demanding in terms of the performance of their devices. The performance of the various “tools” (wide screen, camera, video, microphone, etc.) on board today on a smartphone is scrutinized by users, or better still by specialists in acoustic, photometric or treatment tests.
It is in this context that ARDOP INDUSTRIE is able to provide engineering solutions to support specialists and offer them turnkey solutions for benchmarking smartphones or other equipments for viewing digital content (tablet, screen TV,…).
A photometry bench for what?
You can define different criteria to assess the quality of an image obtained from a smartphone. In order to obtain reliable results, the operator in charge of the test must be able to reproduce stable, repeatable and reproducible lighting conditions. The tests are then operated according to a very precise protocol, with perfectly known measuring instruments and arranged in a controlled configuration. All of these factors lead to proposing very precise test configurations. Generally, the safest way to guarantee all of these conditions is to group the measuring instruments and units under test on a specific metrology bench. Indeed, photometry tests are only a small part of the set of tests that can be performed on a smartphone. As an example, today specialists are able to test the camera, screen, speakers, battery, camera, video rendering, etc.

What technical solutions to provide?
In the specific case of photometry tests, the parameters generally checked are color rendering, contrast and progressivity, directivity and density. To carry out these measurements, the illumination of the smartphone must be as uniform as possible. It can be achieved by means of a POC lighting controlled in wavelength and in illuminance.

The measurement is then carried out using a colorimeter / photometer camera and / or a spectro-radiometer which analyze the different optical parameters of the acquired images. These devices are then positioned on a bench to ensure the correct measurement configuration.
ARDOP INDUSTRIE has had expertise for several years on these equipments. Today, ARDOP INDUSTRIE has the capacity and the know-how to offer this kind of complete benches, fully integrated and turnkey for the end-user.
